I love that Jesus said, "pick up your mat and walk." To me, it says - you CAN do this and I WILL help you. In fact, you've had the power all along, you just keep waiting for someone else to do the hard work for you. I so struggle with this whether it's housework or apologizing, overcoming an addiction or drawing closer to God. I just need to DO IT already instead of hoping someone will come along side of me and just do an "I Dream Of Jeannie" blink with their eyes and change me and/or my circumstances. He said he had no one to help him get into the water-- although how he got to and from the pool every day is not explained. The comparison bears out your contention. The comparison of paralysis and addiction is helpful. I think that the paralysis also has a wider application than addiction. People get "stuck" -- become immovable, stop growing-- in so many ways.
